PLC Control Panel Design, Manufacturing & Supply

A PLC control panel does far more than house a PLC. Its design affects how reliably equipment runs, how easily the system can be installed and how straightforward future fault finding and upgrades will be.

IPA Control Systems designs and manufactures industrial PLC control panels around the equipment, I/O and control requirements of each project, with in-house testing before Australia-wide supply.

Whether you already have approved drawings or need support with the panel design, our team can help define the right path forward.

PLC Control Panels Built Around Your Equipment

An industrial PLC control panel brings the PLC, I/O, protection, power and communication components together so machinery or a process can be monitored and controlled from one system.

The exact configuration depends on what the equipment needs to do. A panel may connect sensors, instruments, motors, drives, HMIs, network hardware and other field devices, with the PLC processing the inputs and controlling the required outputs.

IPA builds PLC control panels for applications including:

This equipment-first approach matters. The panel needs to suit the control requirements outside the enclosure as much as the components inside it.

PLC Control Panel
Design & Engineering

Good PLC control panel design starts with the control architecture, I/O and equipment requirements before moving into the physical panel layout.

IPA can account for digital and analogue I/O, local and remote I/O, instrumentation, motors and drives, HMI or SCADA interfaces, network requirements and future expansion.

The physical design also needs to consider the environment in which the panel will operate. Available space, cable entry, heat, dust, moisture, washdown conditions and maintenance access can all affect the enclosure and internal layout.

IPA uses EPLAN for electrical engineering and can produce project documentation including:

  • Electrical schematics and wiring diagrams
  • General arrangement drawings
  • Component schedules
  • Cable schedules
  • I/O lists
  • Termination schedules
  • As-built drawings

The result is a panel design that supports the build, installation and future maintenance rather than treating each stage as a separate problem.

From Your Drawings or From the Design Stage

Not every PLC panel project starts at the same point.

PLC Panels as Part of a Complete Control System

A PLC panel will often form one part of a larger automation system.

Depending on the project, it may interface with HMI panels, SCADA systems, remote I/O, industrial networks, instrumentation, drives and field equipment. These connections need to be considered during the panel design so the completed assembly fits the wider control architecture.

For SAGE Automation at Swanbank, IPA designed and manufactured a replacement main SCADA panel containing dual PLC/I/O racks, network switching infrastructure, Moxa gateways and expanded I/O modules.

IPA also manufactured a companion HMI panel with a door-mounted HMI and 24VDC power supply.

The project shows how PLC, I/O, communications and operator interfaces can be brought together across an integrated industrial control system.

Built Ready for Installation

A PLC control panel should arrive ready to install, not create extra work on site.

IPA completes the full build in-house, including component mounting, power and control wiring, termination, labelling and final inspection.

Before dispatch, each panel undergoes Factory Acceptance Testing, with continuity, insulation resistance and functional testing completed where required. Test records and supporting electrical documentation are supplied with the build.

This process has helped IPA maintain a 0% installation rework rate.

A PLC Panel Manufacturer That Understands the Site

IPA Control Systems combines panel engineering and manufacturing with practical industrial electrical and automation experience.

In-House Engineering, Build & Testing: One team manages the project from electrical design through manufacture, FAT and documentation.

80+ Years of Combined Hands-On Experience: The IPA team brings practical experience across industrial controls, automation, instrumentation, electrical engineering and panel manufacturing.

EPLAN-Certified Electrical Design: Schematics, I/O lists, cable schedules, termination schedules and as-built documentation can be produced in-house.

Australia-Wide Supply: PLC control panels are manufactured at IPA’s South East Queensland workshop and supplied to projects across Australia.

14-Day Average Turnaround on Suitable Builds: Panels using standard off-the-shelf enclosures average 14 days from approved drawings, subject to component availability and project requirements.

Industrial Site Experience: IPA understands how panel layout, access, wiring and documentation affect installation, commissioning, fault finding and future maintenance.

FAQs

An industrial PLC control panel is an electrical enclosure that houses a programmable logic controller and the supporting components needed to monitor and control industrial equipment. Depending on the application, this can include I/O modules, power supplies, circuit protection, relays, network hardware, terminals and HMI connections.

Useful information can include electrical drawings, a BOM, I/O lists, equipment details, specifications and preferred components. You can still contact IPA if some of this information has not been finalised, as the team can review the project and identify what is needed before manufacture begins.

Yes. IPA can manufacture PLC control panels from approved client drawings, specifications and BOMs. This service is suited to system integrators, engineering companies, electrical contractors and OEMs that already have the panel engineering completed.

Yes. A PLC panel can form part of a broader control system that includes HMIs, SCADA, local or remote I/O, network equipment and field devices. The exact configuration depends on the control architecture and project requirements.

Yes. IPA manufactures PLC control panels at its South East Queensland workshop and supplies completed panels to projects across Australia.
